During the Great Depression in the 1930s，my grandparents Milas and Mary Dunaway lived well on their small farm — always busy with gardening，beekeeping or one of their many other projects.They also owned a tiny country store.Almost every day，you could find my brothers，my cousins and me hanging around our grandparents' place，eyeballing Grandmother's teacakes and other goodies.Grandpa，on the other hand，was the person we would try to move quickly to avoid，because he always had dozens of things just waiting for us.
One fine spring day，when Cousin Mary and I had just planned a full day of playing around when Grandpa saw us. "Come on，" he said. "I need you to help plant soybeans（大豆） ." We were a little afraid of him，so we had to follow along.The field，which wasn't really very big，looked like a hundred acres（英畝）to Mary and me.
Grandpa showed us how he wanted the soybeans dropped into the furrow（犁溝） he made in each row.This was fun for a few minutes，but we quickly got tired of dropping soybean after soybean，evenly spaced，into the soil.The job seemed endless.When we began dropping the soybeans too thickly，he would correct us.Under the watchful eye of Grandpa，we planted carefully behind him，soybean after soybean，slowly down the rows.
But as he began to trust us to do it right，Grandpa worked his way a good distance ahead of us.Suddenly，as we looked toward him，Mary and I noticed a hollow stump（空心的樹(shù)樁）up ahead that had not been cleared from the field.That's when a trick started.We looked at the soybeans，looked at the stump and looked at Grandpa.Walking slowly and heavily along，one tiny soybean at a time，we came near to the stump.Once we reached it we quickly put more than a gallon of soybeans into the stump and began covering the whole thing with dirt.Just then Grandpa turned and looked our way.
